¿Qué has hecho este fin de semana?

Aanya: Hola, Marco. ¿Cómo estás?
Marco: Muy bien, Ana. ¿Y tú?
Aanya:  Más o menos. Estoy constipada y cansadísima.
Marco: ¿Y qué has hecho para estar así?
Aanya: Bueno, es que este fin de semana ha sido muy intenso, ha hecho mucho frío y creo que ya me estoy haciendo mayor.
Marco: Jajaja, qué exagerada. A ver, ¿qué has hecho este fin de semana para estar así?
Aanya:  Pufff, muchas cosas. Este sábado han sido las fiestas de mi pueblo y no he parado a descansar ni un minuto. Fiesta y más fiesta.
Marco: Bueno, ¿y no has tenido hoy libre?
Aanya:  ¡Qué va! He quedado con mis amigos del pueblo para desayunar juntos. Después he cogido el coche y he venido aquí para comer con mi familia porque es el cumpleaños de mi hermana y ya sabes cómo son en mi casa. Primero hemos ido al restaurante de nuestro tío Paco para comer paella. Después han pedido copas para todos , que yo no quería beber, pero ha sido imposible decir que no. Más tarde hemos ido a una churrería para tomar chocolate caliente y finalmente, hemos cenado en una pizzería cerca de aquí. Ahora mis amigos quieren salir, pero les he dicho que no puedo, que yo estoy muerta.
Marco: Normal, te entiendo jajaja. Qué diferencia de fin de semana.
Aanya:  ¿Sí? ?Que qué has hecho tú?
Marco: Prácticamente nada. He estado todo el finde estudiando. Tengo los exámenes pronto y no quiero suspender otra vez.
Aanya:  ¿Pero no has salido ni un poco?
Marco: Nada de nada. Me he levantado muy pronto, he desayuno bien para tener energías y me he ido directo a la habitación para estudiar y estudiar.
Aanya:  Buah, qué duro ha sido.
Marco: Duro no, aburrido. Estudiar derecho constitucional no es nada apasionante.
Aanya:  No, ¡qué va! es horrible. ¿Y no has visto la televisión o algún capítulo de la serie esa que tanto te gusta y que no recuerdo ahora?

Este fin de semana he ido a Delhi. Allí he visitado a mi amiga Seema, Seema vive en un piso muy bonito cerca del centro de Delhi. Direct objects and direct object pronouns

When the direct object of a verb is a person, it must always be preceded by a in Spanish –
this is called the personal a:

John sees the children.
Carlos  ve a los niños.

But

John sees the cars.
Carlos  ve los coches.

As we have seen before, pronouns are used to replace a noun, so instead of saying:
Carlos  sees the cars.
Assuming that both the speaker and the listener know what is being referred to, we can
use the direct object pronoun to replace ‘the cars’ and say:  Carlos sees them.



Direct object pronouns are generally placed before the verb, for example:
John sees me.
Juan me ve.

I see you. (familiar sing.)
(Yo) te veo.

We see him./We see it. (masc. sing.)/We see you. (polite sing. masc.)
Lo vemos.

They see her./We see it. (fem. sing.)/We see you. (polite sing. fem.)
La ven.

They see us.
Nos ven.

We see you. (familiar pl.)
Os vemos.

We see them. (masc.)/We see you. (polite pl. masc.)
Los vemos.


We see them. (fem.)/We see you. (polite pl. fem.)
Las vemos.


The third person pronouns lo and la are often replaced by person rather than a thing:
e.g.
 John sees it.

Juan lo ve. 

but

John sees him.
Juan le (or lo) ve.

Similarly in the plural:

John sees them. (e.g. the cars)
Juan los ve.

but

John sees them. (e.g. the children)
Juan les ve.

We have seen that the direct object pronoun generally comes before the main verb, but
there are some cases where the pronoun is added to the end of the verb form – notably the
infinitive:

e.g.

 I am going to buy it.

  Voy a comprarlo.*

  We are going to visit you tomorrow.

  Vamos a visitarte mañana.* 

*There is an alternative position for the pronoun in these sentences – i.e. Lo voy a
comprar/Te vamos a visitar mañana – but at this stage it is better to add it to the
infinitive.


Indirect objects and indirect object pronouns

In Spanish the indirect object is always preceded by the preposition a:




Juan escribe una carta a su novia.

John writes a letter to his girlfriend./
John writes his girlfriend a letter.
Remember that in Spanish an a may also introduce the direct object of a verb when the
direct object is a person (the personal a – see above). So in the case of a sentence such as

Juan ve a María

the a does not mean ‘to’ and is simply introducing the direct object, since María is the
person directly affected by the verb – she is seen. Therefore a María would be replaced
by a direct object pronoun and not an indirect one:
Juan la ve.

As we have just seen with direct objects, indirect object can be replaced by a pronoun.
These pronouns are called indirect object pronouns:

John gave the letter to her.

Or

John gave her the letter.




e.g. 
He sends me a letter.
 Me envía una carta.

 We give you the news.
Os damos las noticias. 

You will see that le can mean ‘to him’, ‘to her’, ‘to it’ and ‘to you’. Similarly, les can
mean ‘to them’, ‘to you’. If there is any uncertainty about the meaning of the pronoun it
is possible to use the forms: a él, a ella, a Vd., a ellos, a ellas and a Vds. after the verb
for clarification, but these forms can never replace the indirect object pronouns, le and les:


Le doy el regalo (a él).
I give him the present.
Les envío la carta (a ellas).
I send them the letter.
Le digo la verdad (a Ud.).
I tell you the truth.
Les damos el mensaje (a Uds.).
We give you the message.

As with the direct object pronoun, the indirect object pronoun comes in front of the verb.
If the verb is in the infinitive, the best thing at this stage is to add the pronoun directly to
the infinitive:

Voy a darle el libro (a él).
I am going to give him the book.

If both a direct object pronoun and an indirect object pronoun occur in the same sentence,
the indirect pronoun is placed before the direct pronoun:
e.g.

Juan me lo envía.
  John sends it to me.

Mis padres te lo dan.
  My parents give it to you. 
This also applies if the pronouns are added to the end of the infinitive:

Voy a dártelo.*
I am going to give it to you.

*Note that a stress mark now becomes necessary – see introductory section on
‘Pronunciation’.
There is one further detail that you need to be aware of and this is what happens when
there are two pronouns together, both beginning with l … (e.g. le for ‘to him’ and lo for
‘it’). In such cases the first of the two pronouns is replaced by se, whether it is singular or
plural:
e.g.

Juan se lo da.
  John gives it to him/her/you. 


If there is any possible ambiguity, a él, a ella, a usted, etc. can be added for clarity (see
above).
