French Negatives - NE.... PAS - Exceptional rules - La négation en français
Bonjour Students,
In this blog you are going to learn some basic rules of French negatives with the suitable examples. I have also attached the worksheet via link you can download for free.
In French, the negative construction is formed with "ne/n'...pas" which means "not" in English. Here are the rules of negatives with different articles and the verb être:
With
definite articles:
When using
definite articles (le, la, les), "ne" comes before the article and
"pas" comes after the verb.
Example: Je ne bois pas le café. (I don't drink coffee.)
With indefinite articles:
When using indefinite articles (un,
une, des), "ne" comes before the article and "pas" comes
after the verb.
Example: Je ne veux pas d'eau. (I
don't want any water.)
With
partitive articles:
When using
partitive articles (du, de la, des), "ne" comes before the article
and "pas" comes after the verb.
Example : Je ne mange pas de viande. (I
don't eat meat.)
With
contracted articles:
When using
contracted articles (au, aux, du, des), "ne" comes before the
contracted article and "pas" comes after the verb.
Example : Je ne vais pas au cinéma. (I
am not going to the cinema.)
With
the verb être:
When using
the verb être (to be), "ne" comes before the verb and "pas"
comes after the verb. Moreover there will be no change in article if there is être
conjugated verb in sentence.
Example : Je ne suis pas fatigué. (I am not
tired.)
C’est une voiture - Ce n’est pas une voiture.
In all cases, "ne" can be contracted to
"n'" before a vowel sound.
Examples:
Je n'aime pas les bananes. (I don't
like bananas.)
Il ne va pas au travail aujourd'hui.
(He is not going to work today.)
Nous ne sommes pas en retard. (We are not late.)
Remember that when there are multiple verbs in a sentence, "pas" comes after the conjugated verb, but before the other verbs.
Example : Je ne veux pas aller au cinéma ce soir. (I don't want to go to the cinema tonight.)
